Work Based learning Opportunities

All students should experience at least 1 related Work Based Learning experience for each program. 

​Work based learning can include:
  • Informational Interview
  • Job Shadow- a one day experience exploring a company. You must fill out a Job Shadow form.
  • Field Experience
  • Paid and/or Unpaid Work​​
Students should strive to achieve a  Paid and/or Unpaid Work Based Learning Experience during their second year. However, students/parents should reference the "WBL Student Preparation Worksheet" to assist students in becoming ready for work site placements.

Student eligibility for wbl


  • 7 of 12 curriculum segments completed
  • 2.0 grade or better in Technical Skills
  • 3.0 grade or better in Career Ready Habits
  • No academic Pullouts
  • Able to meet industry safety requirements (Ex: Immunizations, Background Check, Drug Screen)
This optional tool can be used to support students in their preparation for industry. 

unpaid  experience

paid experience
Unpaid work experiences are a great way to gain valuable industry experience for your resume. It will also allow  you to decide if you are really interested in that area of work. If you are "hired" for unpaid training, your work hours can be substituted for school hours (as long as they occur during the school day), but you must submit time sheets weekly and you can't exceed 40 hours total (unless you obtain a new training plan from the teacher.)
You must complete the Training Info Sheet, along with the Instructor Recommendation form. Return those forms to the School to Career Coordinator.

Note:      

Allow ample time for the STC to gather all the insurance information before work
Paid work experiences are very similar to unpaid and are a great way to gain experience, while honing your technical skills.
If you are "hired" for unpaid training, your work hours can be substituted for school hours (as long as they occur during the school day), but you must submit time sheets weekly and you can't exceed 24 hours per week. 
You must complete the Training Info Sheet, along with the Instructor Recommendation form. Return those forms to the School to Career Coordinator.
